But all are part of a pattern of violence and viral incitement in which the extremes of intolerance react to and further radicalize one another online. The attack in Morocco was not of the same magnitude as the mass shooting that killed 51 people at mosques in New Zealand three months later, or the Easter bombings in Sri Lanka five weeks after that, when more than 200 people attending church services were killed. Many were expressions of condolences, but some were gestures of astonishing cruelty, saying their daughters deserved to die and attaching links to the video of their slaughter. Their mothers were inundated with messages on Facebook. (Charlotte Schmitz for The Washington Post) (Charlotte Schmitz for The Washington Post)įor families of the victims, the aftermath compounded the pain. The picture was taken by Irene Ueland, who had it framed for her daughter's funeral. When officials in Norway and Denmark pleaded with the public to stop sharing the video, that effort was denounced by far-right groups as a betrayal of religion and race - censorship of content that revealed the true nature of Islam.Ī picture of Maren Ueland hangs in her mother’s home in Bryne, Norway. “It’s God awakening us Germanic men to action. “Look at this video of the one girl being decapitated alive,” wrote a far-right figure in Norway as he posted a link to his Twitter account. Extremists posted gruesome scenes of the women’s deaths on Facebook, Twitter and other platforms alongside condemnations of Islam and calls for a civilizational clash. Within days, the one-minute, 16-second recording spread rapidly across networks associated with the far-right and white-nationalist movements. The most alarming audience, however, was one that the attackers had not envisioned. An attack that had gone unheard and unseen ended up being viewed millions of times by Islamic State supporters who didn’t share the group’s selectivity, by dark-Web bottom dwellers devoted to gore and by the morbidly curious. The Islamic State did not distribute the video, refused to acknowledge the attack and to this day has ignored the Moroccans’ pledges of loyalty. The targeting of defenseless women and the abysmal quality of the recording managed to violate the standards of a terrorist group not known for having any. Their overriding aim was to impress the Islamic State, earn the status of soldiers in its apocalyptic struggle and see their own recording distributed across the group’s propaganda platforms. The killers, poor and uneducated, became absorbed in a violent Islamist universe they saw on the screens of their cellphones, then sought their own place in it. The December 2018 attack, like so many in this age of mass killings and social media, was an act of senseless and performative violence. They attacked Ueland, a Norwegian, and her Danish friend, Jespersen, in their sleeping bags, stabbed them until their bodies went limp and severed their heads in a ghastly sequence recorded on a cellphone. The men waited until after nightfall, then approached the women’s tent with knives and misplaced hopes of becoming Islamist heroes. Maren Ueland, 28, and Louisa Jespersen, 24, Scandinavian students who revered the outdoors, were descending North Africa’s highest peak in December when they encountered four men searching for Westerners to kill. MARRAKESH, Morocco - Their screams must have carried for miles in the thin air of the Atlas Mountains, anguished sounds of a terrorist attack that no one was there to hear, see or stop. She said Paperless Post now has to manage inventory and compete with party supply players that have already established themselves in the category. After years of monetizing via ads, the company pivoted to focus on commerce last year and now says it’s Amazon’s biggest gift affiliate.ĭespite its growth opportunities, Minkow said developing an e-commerce business is no easy task. Evite, which also started as a digital invitation service, has also begun facilitating gifting. Paperless Post isn’t the only online invitation company that expanded into commerce. Instead of investing in features centered around the pandemic, the company instead focused on long-term goals like building out Party Shop as well as its text invitation feature. When the pandemic hit in the second quarter of 2020, Paperless Post lost 85% of its revenue versus the previous year. It “really builds that relationship almost at an end-to-end level.”Īdditionally, having a diversified source of revenue could also make a company less vulnerable to industry disruptions. “It’s also an opportunity to more deeply connect with your current customer and have more interactions or touch points with them,” Minkow said. Melissa Minkow, director of retail strategy at digital consultancy firm CI&T, said expanding to an entirely different category can give companies the opportunity to reach more customers and gain more customer insight. Party Shop offers themes like floral and safari as well as seasonal ones such as Halloween. The company has an in-house design team and has had over 40 designer and brand partnerships, including Oscar de la Renta and Rifle Paper Co., among others. Hirschfeld said the company has utilized consumer data to identify themes, color schemes and the types of events that people are celebrating. territories. So far, Hirschfeld said Party Shop is seeing a “high” average order value, with some customers spending over $1,000 on orders. The company also delivers to locations within the U.S. The prices of the products can vary, but a party kit fit for eight guests can run from $78.50 to $174.25. “The digital product drives towards people having more meaningful gatherings.”įrom tableware and decorations to costumes and full party kits, Party Shop offers products from brands like Meri Meri, Caspari and Atelier Saucier. “We’ve always been a digital company, but our focus is helping people get together in the real world,” Hirschfeld said. The company’s revenue, most of which comes from selling its online invitations, is up 50% this year from 2019. It has seen an influx of events planned on its platform even compared to pre-pandemic levels. Paperless Post boasts a total of over 175 million invitation senders and receivers since its founding in 2009 and has received over $50 million in funding to date. And it joins other digital invitation businesses trying to grow revenue via commerce. Paperless Post users have hosted about 19 million events since inception. By introducing Party Shop, the company hopes to facilitate the next step of the party planning process, especially now as in-person events make a comeback. Paperless Post said it wanted to win a larger share of the party market after learning how its customers spend an estimated $5 billion on events each year. “The invitation is the beginning of a planning process that kind of leads up to the event where people really are excited and shopping.” “After the invitation gets sent, it kicks off a whole period of planning,” said James Hirschfeld, CEO and co-founder of Paperless Post. You would think that at that size latency would be intolerable, but underruns virtually eliminated.Ħ.) I have tried to check the signal size or for "hidden" signal by counting up my dBV's, but I may have fundamentally misunderstood this concept. The entire clip has exported cleanly 6 times although the distortion continues to happen during playback, which would seem to implicate them, but I can raise the buffer size to 16,384 frames (LMMS max) and it has no effect. LMMS doesn't seem to have a way to count underruns. So I believe that LMMS has direct soundcard access but can not be 100% sure at this time.ĥ.) That brings us to buffer underruns. I assume since it is not providing a toggle that it would use the exclusive mode as default, but I can't confirm that yet since LMMS doesn't have great documentation. The problem is that the only way to toggle between modes seems to be through the interface of your DAW and LMMS does not appear to offer any option for that. It can operate in exclusive mode or shared mode - in exclusive it should give direct and exclusive soundcard access. I have this selected in LMMS for my backend. It does not work with LMMS, however, that should be moot in terms of bypassing windows kmixer because Windows apparently has its own built in way to do that - WASAPI. At this samplerate increasing demand for playback does not shake it out of its pattern.Ĥ.) I've seen a lot of advice online for Asio4all as a method for giving the DAW exclusive and direct access to the soundcard. However, when the samplerate is set to 44100 Hz the crackle is from the beginning of the song everytime, in quiet, brief, and regular intervals about 1/3 of a second apart (just counting in my head). Sometimes it is quiet and brief, sometimes loud and extended. Occasionally, however it will happen immediately. It is never in the same place, but always in the same general areas. When it is set to 48000 Hz the crackling is inconsistent, seeming to be better at first, but building up with more playbacks, the more frequent the playback requests the worse. Although it has happened in all of these circumstances, it does not happen every time.ģ.) There is a difference in the distortion depending on whether I set the samplerate in Windows Sounds/Playback/Speakers/Properties/Advanced to 0 Hz or 0 Hz. That could bebecause of the static-y nature of thunder and rain. It has happened in all of these circumstances, although it was easier to provoke with Vestige than AudioFile. I have tried each of these tracks singly (with "solo" selected so the others are muted, although still being processed) and of course everything together. None of that seems to have any effect.Ģ.) I don't believe it is a single instrument or plugin because it happens with the Vestige plugin playing a "thunder" instrument, another Vestige running "rain", an AudioFile plugin playing an on board "explosion.ds" sample and another 2 Audiofiles with high and low pitch. Here is what I have tried so far:ġ.) First, I turned off system sounds, turned power usage to high performance, turned HQ mode in the DAW on and off. I'm using LMMS 1.0 and a Realtek built in soundcard on a 64 bit Windows 7 laptop. I would sincerely appreciate any help anyone could give diagnosing this problem. I am new to digital music and I am unable to fix a crackling in my DAW. The illustrator of The Goldilocks Variations, Jessica Ahlberg, is his daughter. After his wife's death, Ahlberg continued to write children's books that were illustrated by various artists. Their books included The Jolly Postman and Burglar Bill. Adding to the fun are some words that are popular in England where the author lives but may be new to your child, like "cheeky" and "buns."Īuthor and Illustrator: British author Allan Ahlberg has written, a great many children's books, many of the earlier ones in collaboration with his wife, Janet, who died in 1994. Alone? finds Goldilocks at home alone with her family until bedtime when she's joined by some of the characters in the previous stories. Everybody, in which the bears' house fills up as Goldilocks is joined by characters from other tales, including three little pigs, a grandma, a girl in a red cloak with a hood, a witch disguised as a poor old woman, seven dwarfs and more. In the middle of the book is a delightful small book titled Puss in Boots Productions Presents Goldilocks The Play, which includes the script, stage directions, the audience's responses, lots of illustrations and a little pop-up of the bears' house in Act 3. The next tale is told from the point of view of the furniture and other generally inanimate objects. The first tale is the traditional tale, the second tale includes 33 bears, and the third tale involves not the bears' cottage in the woods but the three bliims' spaceship in the woods and lots of fun made-up words. This very entertaining book has so many clever, but small, details in the pen and watercolor illustrations that it's a good book to share one to one with a child rather than with a group. There is even a little book within the book as well as some pop-ups and other surprises throughout the book. That's not all you'll find in this amusing collection of fairy tales with a twist. Summary: The subtitle, rather than the title, fills the cover with the words Goldilocks and the Three Bears and the 33 Bears and the Bliim and the Furniture and Lots More Variations.
